Colorado Avalanche fans have rarely felt energy like this in December, with the team's record blazing the NHL and the Christmas break set up around peak Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar dominance, Avalanche history now tied to a record pace. The Avalanche are 27-2-7 for 61 points through 36 games, the best mark in the league and one of the strongest starts any NHL club has ever posted before the holiday pause.

The Avalanche have been virtually untouchable on home ice, winning all 15 regulation games and adding two overtime points at Ball Arena. That consistency has driven a 14-0-2 home mark, and Colorado hasn't lost at home since late October.

Avalanche sit atop NHL standings with historic points.

Will Petersen from Denver Sports writes that Nathan MacKinnon leads the NHL in goals and sits among the top scorers in points, driving the attack with elite pace night after night. His chemistry with linemates has stretched opposing defenders and created a balanced scoring load. Veteran Martin Necas chips in behind MacKinnon, while the defense corps anchored by Cale Makar ensures Colorado stays dangerous at both ends of the ice.
Goal tending has been a quiet strength too. Scott Wedgewood has posted stellar numbers between the pipes, giving Colorado reliable net presence every night. His consistency has kept the puck out of the net enough to let the offense build and maintain the league's best point total.
There's history in this start, and Avalanche fans are comfortable saying they've never seen anything like it. The 1979-80 Flyers once posted a similar one-regulation-loss pace early in a season, but Colorado's combination of talent, balance, and depth has pushed this club into rarefied territory.
Colorado isn't just best in the Central Division, it's setting a benchmark for the league. Every aspect of their game feels dialed in right now, a tribute to Head Coach Jared Bednar's system and the players' buy-in. On the power play, they move the puck crisply. In five-on-five play, they drive possession and slot chances. Their penalty kill has been aggressive and opportunistic, often flipping momentum in big moments.
Defensemen jump into the play without risking structure, and forwards collapse back to support defensively when needed. That two-way play makes Colorado resilient, and it's the reason this club hasn't trailed in regulation many times this year. Opponents struggle to find breathing room against this group.
Looking ahead after the holiday layoff, the Avalanche will aim to keep this historic pace rolling. There's still a long season ahead and records to chase, but fans in Denver can savor a magical half-season at least. This Avalanche team might be remembered for years not just for wins, but for the way it played every shift with purpose.
