Every season delivers a surprise and Sam Malinski is shaping into one for the Colorado Avalanche as his calm game and rising minutes fuel real momentum.

The undrafted 25 year old earned his spot with steady puck touches, simple exits, and sharp reads under pressure. Colorado trusted him with heavier shifts in November, and the coaching staff kept pushing his role as he handled each bump with poise.

Sam Malinski's surprising self-assessment has the Avalanche community wondering what comes next for the young defenseman.

"It's very hard to see the light on the other side sometimes," said Avs defenseman Sam Malinski.

His minutes and production are rising fast, but the path here wasn't linear.
Malinski's path has never been straightforward. He signed out of Cornell in 2023, bounced between Denver and the Colorado Eagles, and spent long stretches waiting for the next call. He kept building his play, and he kept speaking openly about the faith that helped him through the long grind.
He told reporter Megan Angley that the quiet stretches tested him more than anything, and his comment about struggling to see the light resonated because it felt so real. His voice showed relief, not victory, as he described finally sticking in a lineup that demands consistency every night.
His comments landed with fans because everyone watched him grow, shift by shift, into someone who no longer looks like a depth placeholder. I felt that too, because his reads in the neutral zone now look automatic, and that change usually signals a player settling in.
Malinski's numbers back the eye test. He hit eight points through his recent stretch, and his average ice time climbed above the 17 minute mark as Colorado leaned on him during tight games. His entries remain simple but clean, and his defensive gaps rarely break down under pace.
The Avalanche needed that stability. Injuries forced adjustment after adjustment, and Malinski gave the staff a dependable right shot option who plays within structure. His low panic threshold keeps his partners comfortable and his skating helps limit extended zone time.
His reflection on faith stood out because it added depth to an already layered story. He never framed it as a solution, only as a guide, and that honesty made his rise feel earned rather than sudden.
Malinski knows the work never really ends, but he finally looks settled, and his next challenge is proving he can keep this calm rhythm through the long winter grind.
