This could be a tempting time for the Colorado Avalanche to circle back on Kiefer Sherwood, a familiar face now making waves with the Vancouver Canucks. Sherwood's hit-heavy style and scoring spike has stirred interest just as Colorado paces the NHL standings, raising the question: do the Avs really need him?

Sherwood has 12 goals and 4 assists in 2025-26, along with 103 hits, ranking second in the entire league and third in scoring on Vancouver behind elite names.

Stefano Rufino from The Hockey News writes that his physical presence and scoring bump make him a strong bottom-six or secondary-scoring option for a team chasing the Cup.
Still, Colorado currently leads the league (17-1-6) and has shown scoring depth along with elite goaltending.
With several internal options, including healthy NHL and AHL talent, the need for Sherwood is not obvious.
Given Sherwood's modest $1.5 M cap hit and lack of trade protection, acquiring him seems financially feasible.
But Vancouver reportedly values him as a "rising asset," asking for a second-round pick or solid young return.
If injuries pile up or current depth wavers, Sherwood could slide in as a bottom-six wing who wins puck battles and chips in a few goals. Even so, trading for him would consume future assets, which could limit flexibility when re-signing pending RFA/UFA players next offseason.
For now, it feels like the Avalanche front office should watch the market, but act only if roster need and price align. The idea of re-uniting with Sherwood has appeal, yet only the right moment makes it worthwhile.
