Brent Burns delivered again for the Colorado Avalanche, scoring early in the second period and pushing Colorado to a 3-0 lead that never slipped away.

The goal, hammered home less than a minute after the intermission, stood as the winner and added another milestone to a remarkable career for a 40-year-old defenseman still playing like it is 2015.
The tally lifted Burns to 45 career game-winning goals, a number that now places him third all time among NHL defensemen. He moved past legends Al MacInnis and Denis Potvin, two names that usually feel untouchable in most blue line record books, yet Burns continues to chip away with quiet consistency and a heavy shot.

Brent Burns just hit a jaw-dropping NHL milestone.

Nestor Quixtan from Mile High Sticking writes that Burns now trails only Phil Housley, who sits at 49, and former Colorado Avalanche Stanley Cup champion Ray Bourque, who leads the group with 60. Burns, drafted 20th overall by Minnesota in 2003, has already outpaced expectations across two decades, but the idea of him climbing even further suddenly feels less like a fan dream and more like a reasonable outcome.
Colorado's win pushed its record to 18-1-6, a ridiculous stretch that keeps the Avalanche planted at the top of the NHL. The team looks comfortable, attacking off entries with speed and creating layers of support that fit Burns' style perfectly. He joins the rush without hesitation, and Colorado's structure rarely leaves him stranded.
As a fan you cannot help but admire how Burns still plays huge minutes with conviction, even as most defensemen his age have long faded. His anticipation remains one of his best weapons, and the way he jumped into the slot on this goal felt like vintage Burns, not a veteran squeezing out the final years.
Colorado now gets a couple days to breathe before hosting the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday. That matchup gives Burns another chance to inch closer to Housley, and given his pace with Colorado's deep offense, a run at Bourque no longer seems outrageous. His impact stretches beyond numbers too, since he stabilizes transition play and gives the Avalanche yet another trusted option on offensive zone cycles.
Whatever comes next, watching Burns chase history while helping an elite Avalanche team push for another playoff run adds a welcome layer of intrigue to an already electric season.
